Islam is a religion based on principles. All the rules and principles in Islam are compulsory for all the Muslims of the world. Hajj and Umrah are two religious obligations in Islam for all the Muslims of the world. Hajj is obligatory for the Muslims who can afford all the expenses of the journey to Mecca and is able to perform Hajj physically. Hajj is performed in the last month of Zill-Hajj. Umrah can be performed at any time before or after the Hajj in the whole year. Umrah can be performed many times as a Muslim wish but Hajj is obligatory once in a lifetime for the Muslim who can afford it.
Umrah means journey to Mecca by a Muslim at any time in the whole year.
In Arabic, Umrah means “visit to a peopled place”. In Umrah Muslims from all around the world gathered in the same place called Kaaba in Saudi Arabia.
In sharia, Umrah is explained as to perform Tawaf around the Kaaba and Sa’i between the two sacred stones Safa and Marwah. This all is done in the state of Ihram.
Hajj is known as major pilgrimage and is set on all the Muslims who can afford it. Umrah is known as minor pilgrimage. Umrah is not compulsory for the Muslims but it is also highly suggested. Umrah is performed to refresh the Sunnah of our Holy Prophet (S.A.W). They performed four Umrah in His life.
Said to Anas bin Malik:
‘How many times did the Prophet perform Hajj?’ He said: ‘He performed one Hajj and he performed four Umrah: An Umrah during Dhul-Qa’dah; the Umrah of Al-Hudaibiyah, and Umrah with his Hajj and an Umrah from Al-Ji’irranah when he divided up the war spoils of Hunain.'” [Jami` at-Tirmidhi 821 (Sahih)]
Umrah is performed by Tawaf which are seven circles around the Kaaba. Pilgrimage performs Sa’i between Safa and Marwah. This all procedure is performed in the state of Ihram. Ihram is a two clothed dress and it is unstitched. The pilgrimage repeats some verses during the Tawaf of Kaaba.
In Holy Quran Allah says:
Surely the Safa and the Marwa (two mountains in Makkah) are among the signs appointed by Allah; so whoever makes a pilgrimage to the House or pays a visit (to it), there is no blame on him if he goes round them both; and whoever does good spontaneously, then surely Allah is Grateful, Knowing. 2:158
Kaaba is the house of Allah. It is a cubed shaped structure, made up of stone and mofar. Kaaba is covered with a black cloth and the verses of Holy Quran are written with gold on it. Kaaba is considered a very sacred place for all the Muslims of the world. It is called the house of Allah. It is a first place which is build to worship Allah on the earth.
